Our featured pick: EZglow
The EZglow Modern Shabbos Lamp is our own Shabbos lamp. It plugs into the wall, puts out 1,000 lumens of warm white LED light, and is rated for 110 to 240V. The slim body is iron and aluminum, in black, gold or white, and it sells for $54.99.
How a Shabbos lamp works
You turn the lamp on before Shabbos and leave it on until after Shabbos. To make the room dark, you move a cover over the light. To read, you move it back. The lamp itself is never switched on or off, so nothing electrical changes when you adjust the cover. Lamps differ in how the cover moves: some twist, some slide, and some turn the whole housing.
We don't give halachic rulings. Ask your rabbi how your family should use a Shabbos lamp, including on Yom Tov.

A Shabbos lamp as a Chanukah gift
A Shabbos lamp is a gift that gets used every week. It suits a newly married couple, a family moving into a new home, a student heading to dorm or seminary, or anyone who likes to read in bed on Friday night. Check the recipient's nightstand space and whether they travel, then use the table above to match a lamp. More ideas are in our Chanukah shop and Chanukah gifts by recipient.
Frequently asked questions
What Shabbos lamp should I buy?
For most bedrooms, our pick is the EZglow Modern Shabbos Lamp at $54.99: it plugs into the wall, puts out 1,000 lumens of warm white LED light, is rated for 110 to 240V, and has a slim iron and aluminum body in black, gold or white. We also carry KosherLamp, ShabbosLite, Shabbulb and Shabbostick lamps; use the comparison table above to match a lamp to the room.
What is a Shabbos lamp?
A Shabbos lamp, also called a Shabbat lamp or kosher lamp, is a lamp you turn on before Shabbos and leave on. A shade, shutter or cover lets you hide or show the light during Shabbos, so the room can be dark for sleep or bright for reading without switching the lamp on or off.
How does a Shabbos lamp work?
The bulb stays powered the whole time. You twist, slide or turn a cover to block the light or let it through. Nothing electrical changes when you move the cover.
Is a Shabbos lamp allowed on Shabbos and Yom Tov?
Practices differ, so ask your rabbi how your family should use one. Makers publish the rabbinic approvals they received on their own sites, for example Kosher Innovations and ShabbosLite.
How bright should a Shabbos lamp be?
For reading in bed, look at the lumen rating. The EZglow is rated at 1,000 lumens, and the KosherLamp MAX comes with an 800 lumen bulb. For a child's room or hallway, a smaller night light style lamp is often enough.
What is a good Shabbos lamp for travel?
Look for a small lamp with the power options you need. The Shabbostick Mini runs on USB with Israel and EU adapters, the KosherLamp 360 is compact enough for a carry on, and the EZglow is rated for 110 to 240V. Check the plug type where you are going.
