Frequently asked questions

Should I buy the ArtScroll Schottenstein or the Koren Talmud?
Schottenstein gives a phrase-by-phrase elucidation with extensive footnotes, which is the most supported route for learning independently. Koren's Steinsaltz edition uses a cleaner, more flowing translation and a modern page layout. Both cover the whole Shas — the real question is how much scaffolding you want on the page.

Hebrew or English edition?
Hebrew elucidated editions are standard in yeshivos. English editions suit Daf Yomi learners and independent study. Both exist for the complete Shas, and many people own a Hebrew set and a single English volume for the masechta they are currently learning.

Which size is best for Daf Yomi?
Full size if you learn in a fixed place. Travel or compact editions if you learn on a commute or carry the volume daily. A common setup is a full set at home plus a travel volume in a bag.

Do I have to buy the whole Shas at once?
No. Individual masechtos are available, and most people either build a set gradually or buy only the masechta being learned. Complete sets are usually bought as a bar mitzvah, wedding or siyum gift.

What is Oz Vehadar?
A Hebrew publisher known for clearly reset type and well-produced Hebrew-only editions. A common choice for someone who does not need a translation but wants better legibility than an older printing.

How do I find a specific masechta?
