What is the difference between Gassos, Dakkos and Peshutim tefillin?
The difference is how the batim are made. Gassos are formed from the thick hide of a mature animal pressed into a single solid piece — the most durable and the most expensive. Dakkos are made from thinner hide worked over the bayis. Peshutim are the simplest construction. All three are kosher when written and assembled properly; what changes is durability, finish and price.
Should I buy Rashi or Rabbeinu Tam tefillin?
Rashi tefillin are the standard pair, and what almost everyone wears. Rabbeinu Tam tefillin hold the parshiyos in a different order and are worn in addition to Rashi by some, generally later in life and according to family or community custom. Speak to your rav before buying a second pair.
When should we buy a boy's first pair of tefillin?
Most families buy one to three months before the bar mitzvah so there is time to practise putting them on properly. Customs vary by community and some start earlier. If you tell us the bar mitzvah date we can work backwards from it.
Which arm do tefillin go on?
A right-handed wearer puts the shel yad on the left arm, and a left-handed wearer on the right. Tell us which when you order, because the retzuos are prepared differently for each.
How often should tefillin be checked?
A commonly cited practice is having them checked twice in seven years, and sooner if they have been exposed to moisture or heat, or if the paint or corners show cracking. Checking should be done by a sofer.
Can I see tefillin in person before buying?
