When does selichos begin?
Ashkenazim start on the Motzaei Shabbos before Rosh Hashanah, provided at least four days remain before Yom Tov; otherwise a week earlier. Sephardim say selichos through the whole of Elul. Either way, buy before the first night rather than on it.

Which selichos do I need?
Match your minhag — Ashkenaz, Sefard and the Sephardic rites use different texts and different piyutim. This is the one detail people get wrong when buying selichos as a gift.

Do I need selichos if I already have machzorim?
Yes. Selichos are their own volume; a Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur machzor does not contain them.

Is a translated selichos worth it?
For many people it is the single most useful translated sefer of the year — selichos is dense, allusive piyut, and reading it cold in Hebrew at one in the morning is hard going. Interlinear and facing-page editions are both available.

What size should I buy?
Full size for shul; pocket if you say selichos travelling or at different minyanim. Large print is worth it for early-morning selichos in poor light.
