The Ultimate Pesach Shopping Guide: Everything You Need for a Beautiful Seder
A calmer Seder starts with checking the Pesach boxes you already own. Count the people, check the usable pieces, and buy what will make the evening easier to follow. A new centerpiece is lovely; enough readable Haggadahs and a comfortable place for each guest matter more.

First, count places and usable pieces
Write down the adults and children expected at each Seder. Then unpack your Haggadahs, cups, matzah cover, ke’arah and serving pieces. Check for chips, missing inserts, unreadably small print and pieces that have become difficult to handle. Mark each item “ready,” “replace” or “check.” That short inventory prevents buying a second item while overlooking the one you need.
- For each reader: a Haggadah they can comfortably follow.
- For the table: cups, the ke’arah and its individual dishes, a matzah cover, and serving space.
- For the household: the food, utensils and preparation your family follows. Confirm quantities and halachic requirements with your rav where needed.
Choose Haggadahs for participation
Matching editions make page references easier, but identical books are not essential to a good family experience. A guest who needs English instructions and a child who follows through pictures may need different editions from the person leading the Seder.
Look at a sample interior page before choosing. Check the size of the main Hebrew text, whether translation is beside it or interlinear, and whether the commentary interrupts the flow. A large commentary volume can be useful for preparation while a simpler edition stays open at the table.

Fit the ke’arah and matzah cover to your table
Before buying a Seder plate, measure the space it will occupy with the small dishes in place. Check whether those dishes are included, removable and suitable for the intended use. A wide decorative plate can leave surprisingly little room for everyone else’s books.
For a matzah cover, check the usable pocket dimensions and the size and shape of the matzos your family uses. Do not judge capacity from the outer embroidered border. Keep cleaning and storage instructions with the item.
Check cups for capacity and comfortable handling
Choose Kiddush cups by their actual stated capacity, stability and ease of holding. Height alone does not establish capacity. Ask your rav which requirements apply to the drinker, then match those requirements to the cup’s specifications. A decorative tray and a comfortable grip can make a more useful upgrade than extra height.
Prepare children’s books and activities before Yom Tov
Read a Pesach story before the holiday and let a child recognize its objects when you unpack the Seder items. Prepare a simple question, a favorite song or a short part of the story they can share. Participation need not mean staying awake through every moment.
Keep coloring, cutting, gluing and sticker projects for appropriate preparation-day use before Yom Tov. Do not place them at the Seder as an activity suggestion. For Yom Tov itself, choose suitable books and activities consistent with your family’s practice. Check age guidance and small parts when selecting children’s items.
