A dreidel a child decorated themselves gets played with harder than one that came out of a bag of twenty. That is the whole idea here: the child puts the dreidel together, decorates it however they want, and then spins it that same night with everyone else at the table.
It is a good activity for the stretch between candle lighting and the meal, and it works just as well as a class project, since every child ends up with a different dreidel and there is nothing to argue over. No sharp tools are involved, so younger children can do most of it on their own.
