Description
The Coastal Herringbone Grid Kippah is a slate-blue brushed-weave yarmulke for men and boys, available in 9 sizes at $9.99. The base cloth is a small zig-zag herringbone in dusky blue and navy, laid over with a windowpane grid of pale grey lines and a thinner deep-green line running beside each one. The surface has a soft, slightly fuzzy hand that looks more like a winter jacket fabric than a flat print. The rim is cut from the same herringbone and follows the pattern around the edge. Sold by Judaica Square, shipping from Lakewood, NJ.

- Cold-weather months, when brushed fabric looks right
- A father and son in the same pattern, from size 1 to size 6
Not the right choice if
- You need a solid black or velvet kippah for yeshiva
- You want a smooth, shiny fabric for a wedding
- You prefer a light summer cloth; this one looks and feels wintry
- You plan to machine wash it; spot cleaning is safer
Why customers choose it
Herringbone is the fabric of tweed jackets and overcoats, so a herringbone kippah matches the clothes men actually wear from October to March. This one adds a pale grey windowpane over the blue, which breaks up the zig-zag and gives it a tailored look from a distance. The green pinline beside each grey line is only visible up close, a quiet detail rather than a statement. It is a good choice for someone moving on from plain knit or suede to something with more character.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Coastal Herringbone Grid made of?
A brushed woven fabric with a small herringbone weave and a slightly fuzzy surface, so it has the look of a winter jacket cloth.
What colours are in the grid?
The base is slate blue and navy herringbone. Over it runs a windowpane of pale grey lines, each shadowed by a thin dark green line.
How does it compare with the plain navy herringbone kippah?
The navy herringbone is a single tone of zig-zag weave. The Coastal version adds the grey and green windowpane, so it looks more patterned and a little more casual.
Which flat size fits an adult?
The 18 cm and 20 cm flat sizes are the usual adult choices. The 16 cm flat suits a child or a man who likes a very small kippah.
What should I wear it with?
It sits well with navy, grey or charcoal knitwear and with tan or grey trousers. Avoid pairing it with a busy check shirt.
