Description
A regal crown, embroidered in the centre of a velvet face, is the whole of design #181. It is one of the older numbers Malchut still runs, and it has stayed in the line because the proportions are right — the crown is large enough to be the subject of the bag but not so large that it crowds the smaller sizes.
Four sizes are made: the 8.5" x 9.5" tefillin bag, supplied without stones, the 10" x 10.5" bar mitzvah size, the 14" x 14" large talis bag and the 16" x 16" extra large. A bochur beginning to lay tefillin takes one of the two smaller sizes; a man carrying tallis and tefillin together wants the 14x14 or, for a heavy tallis, the 16x16.
Design #181 is also produced as a challah cover and as a megillah case. A household can carry the same crown through the Shabbos table, Purim and the tallis bag, which is the kind of continuity that is easy to build if you decide early and awkward to assemble afterwards.
