The transliteration is what makes it work. A guest who cannot read Hebrew letters can still say Mah Nishtanah, join Hallel and bentch along with everyone else, out loud and in Hebrew, instead of sitting quietly through the parts that matter most. The linear layout keeps the transliteration and translation aligned with the Hebrew so nobody has to be told what page everyone is on.
