Twelve inches by sixteen is a generous footprint: room for a full row of leichter, or a menorah with the oil cups filled and a box of matches parked beside it. Nothing hangs off the edge, which is the whole reason to use a tray in the first place.
Tempered glass takes heat and handling better than ordinary glass, and it cleans in seconds. Wax that has hardened lifts off with a fingernail or a plastic scraper; oil wipes away with a paper towel. The surface does not stain or hold a smell the way a cloth or a wood board does.
Set it under the candles every week and the table underneath stays exactly as it was, which matters more after eight nights of oil than after one Friday night.
