Best ArtScroll Books for a Jewish Home Library

If you want to start an ArtScroll shelf, choose a few books with distinct jobs. A Chumash for following the parshah, a siddur that matches the user's nusach, a practical learning sefer and a book someone wants to read can do more for a home than an arbitrary pile of “must-haves.”

For the parshah: the full-size Stone Chumash

The full-size Stone Chumash brings the Hebrew Torah text and English translation together with commentary, Rashi and Onkelos. It also includes the haftaros and Five Megillos. That makes it a useful candidate when you want a single substantial volume for the table or bookshelf.

For weekday davening on the move: an interlinear siddur

The pocket Schottenstein Interlinear Weekday Siddur, Ashkenaz is an example of a compact edition with translation close to the Hebrew text. The important word in the title is weekday: do not choose it as though it were a complete Shabbos and Yom Tov siddur.

For focused learning: The Shabbos Kitchen

Rabbi Simcha Bunim Cohen's The Shabbos Kitchen, revised and expanded edition focuses on kitchen-related Shabbos topics. It is a subject-based learning choice, rather than a book to buy merely because every home supposedly needs the same halacha shelf.

For narrative reading: Reb Moshe

Rabbi Shimon Finkelman's Reb Moshe, Expanded Edition is a biography of Rav Moshe Feinstein. The expanded edition adds material to the earlier biography, so check which edition a recipient already owns before giving it.

It belongs on the reading shelf for someone interested in a sustained life story. A reader who prefers illustrated historical overviews may enjoy a different format; our biography and history shortlist offers alternatives.

For a young davener: The ArtScroll Children's Siddur

The Peritz Edition ArtScroll Children's Siddur, compiled by Shmuel Blitz and illustrated by Tova Katz, is designed for ages 5–8. It uses selected prayers, explanations and illustrations for beginning daveners. It is not a complete adult siddur or an automatic substitute for the edition requested by a school.

Choose the gap, then choose the book

If your family already owns the Stone Chumash, buying another copy only makes sense if someone needs it. If nobody wants a long biography, choose a shorter reading format. Ask “when will we open this?” before asking which binding looks best.
