The plain one-day memorial candle: wax poured into a shallow metal tin, burning approximately 24 hours. This is the format most shuls put out on the ledge in the back, and the one most people light at home on the evening a yahrtzeit begins.
Because the tin is opaque metal rather than glass, it takes heat without any worry and can sit directly on a counter or a metal tray. It also travels better than glass, which matters if you are lighting somewhere other than home.
