Classic Velvet Challah Cover with Shabbat Kodesh Embroidery #240

Velvet, with Shabbat Kodesh embroidered across the middle and a floral design coming up from beneath it. This is the plainer of the two 240 covers in the sense that nothing has been added — no stones, no border work — but velvet gives it a weight the brocade version does not have, and the lettering reads more sharply against a matte dark pile than it does against a woven pattern.

Silver or gold thread, small at 15 by 17.5 or medium at 15.5 by 19.5. The small suits a table set for a few; the medium is the safer household order and covers a standard pair of challos without pulling tight. Gold on velvet is the more traditional pairing and the one most people take.

The identical design is available on white brocade if you want the lighter version, and 240 is also produced in lucite and as a tallis and tefillin bag. It is a common first cover for a young couple and an easy second cover for a house that needs a spare.
