The three prophets in this volume - Joel, Obadiah, and Micah - all prophesied not after a calamity struck but right before a potential crisis or during the crisis itself. Facing imminent catastrophe, the Jewish people had to decide where their loyalties lay and demonstrate that they understood their moral and ethical responsibilities. Joel's audience faced an invasion that threatened their crops and sustenance. Obadiah's listeners had to deal with an attack on Jerusalem and the betrayal of their family members. Micah and his generation struggled through some of the most tumultuous decades the Jewish people had ever known - the assaults of Aram and Israel on Judah in 734 BCE, followed by the exile of the northern kingdom in 722 BCE, and culminating with the catastrophic Assyrian invasion into Judah in 701 ВСЕ.

Our prophets had to persuade the people to abandon decades of habitual behavior and indifferent attitudes toward God and toward each other. At least two of the prophets, Joel and Micah, successfully effected change among their listeners. How did this come about? And what can we learn from their efforts?
