Description
Tradition, Modernity, and Jewish Unity
- "The task of Jewish thought remains: to build a bridge between galut and ge'ulah, exile and redemption, the real and the ideal, a rope at a time and a plank at a time. Below are the deep waters of secularisation. Behind is the safety of never having attempted the journey. The way is narrow. The risks are great. But the challenge cannot be declined. For Judaism invites us to change, not accept, ourselves and the world." - Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks
- In the last two centuries, Jewish thought has had to respond to dramatic events and transformations: the emergence of Jews into open societies, secularisation, assimilation and antisemitism, the Holocaust and the State of Israel. These developments tested to the limits the continuity of Judaism. It seemed as if to embrace modernity was to abandon tradition; to preserve tradition was to reject modernity.
- Tradition in an Untraditional Age, first published in 1990, explores these chal- lenges through analyses of thinkers including R. Samson Raphael Hirsch, R. Moses Sofer, R. Abraham Isaac Kook, R. Joseph Soloveitchik, Franz Rosenz- weig and Martin Buber, as well as studies of topics including the Holocaust, Jewish-Christian dialogue, Jewish economic ethics and religious alienation and return. It also sets out an agenda for future Jewish thought.
