Description
From the Back Cover
The act of the Bris, 'circumcision', is one of the most fundamental acts of Jewish life. It is an Os, a 'sign' or signature, of entering into a covenant with the Creator.
A covenant, by definition, means an eternal relationship, one that can never be broken. The Bris, as a sign of our entering into this covenant, is etched into the very fabric of our bodies, never to be forgotten as long as we live.
The Bris links us into an ancestral chain of history and tradition that bears witness to a sacred relationship that is beyond comprehension, unconditional, and eternally binding. This is the basic reason why the Bris is performed as we are infants -- either literally, as in when we are babies, or figuratively, as in the case of a new convert, who is considered as if reborn from the waters of a Mikvah/ ritual bath, or even when one is older in years, but still considered an infant in Jewish education and knowledge-- demonstrating that this relationship is not founded on convention or rationale. It is deeply ingrained into the essence of who we are, acting upon the most sensitive organ that is the source of (future) life.
