Description
A Sister in White is the true story of Selma Meir, told for young readers by Miriam Zakon in the Great Women series. Trained as a nurse in Germany, a world of spotless order, Selma accepted a job as head nurse at Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem. The plan was to stay for three years. She stayed for seventy.
Known to everyone as Schvester Selma, she faced epidemics, filth and war, cared for the sick, took in orphans and turned a crowded, primitive hospital into a clean and well-run one. Readers also meet Dr. Wallach, the hospital's fiery founder, and Dudu, the outspoken washerwoman. Archival photographs bring old Jerusalem to life in this inspiring biography for girls.
