In this poignant, memorable historical novel, Selig Schachnowitz takes the few known facts about the legendary ger tzedek of Vilna, Valentin Potocki, and weaves them into the rich tapestry of Jewish life in the Ashkenazic communities of mid-18th century Europe. Valentin, the son of old Count Potocki and the hope of Lithuania's Catholics for the cardinal's mantle, converts to Judaism.

Then, as Avrohom ben Avrohom, he wends his way through the major Jewish communities of Europe, to try to unify world Jewry in anticipation of the great, final redemption, all the while haunted by the pure eyes of a Jewish child whom he saved, and by the evil eyes of a Polish secret agent which seem to follow him everywhere he goes.
