Description
Dense embroidery across the whole face of the cover, catalogued by Malchut as design #540. The stitching is the point here: it is the same needlework that goes onto their leather and velvet bags, laid out on a flat panel where nothing distracts from it. Held up under the light of a shul or a dining room, it reads as pattern rather than as fabric with a pattern on it.
This is the cover the baby is under during the bris itself, so it needs to sit well, drape without bunching, and look right from every angle in a crowded room. Most families use one for a first son and keep it for every son after him. It is the sort of thing that ends up in every set of bris photos the family owns, and then in the photos of the generation after that.
Design #540 also runs as a tallis and tefillin bag. Grandparents sometimes work that in the obvious direction — the bris cover now, and the matching bag put away for the boy's bar mitzvah thirteen years out. If that is the plan, order both together while the design number is still running.
