Description
of Miracles During World War II
Grainom Lazewnik (pronounced "Leh-ZEV-nik") wanted nothing more than to
remain learning in the illustrious Novardok yeshiva. But Heaven had other plans
for him.
With the German invasion of his native Poland, the soft-spoken scholar is
called up for military duty. Again and again, young Grainom witnesses Heavenly
forces protecting him from every threat, like a sheet of armor.
A vision from his dreams saves him from death. An angel intercedes to halt
an attacker. Good fortune comes to his hand and mortal danger is prevented by
supernatural protection.
Now those words of prayer and learning accompany him as beacons of hope
and praise of the Almighty as he goes from being a prisoner to the Germans, to a
partisan fighter, and finally to the front lines with the Russian army as they pur-
sued the retreating Germans, in the decisive attack that continued until the fall
of Berlin and complete German surrender.
For decades, this book was privately circulated amongst Rav Grainom's fam-
ily, friends and neighbors. This newly reformatted edition brings Rav Grainom's
Guarded from Above to the greater public readership for the first time.
At Rav Grainom's explicit instruction, the text itself has been left unchanged
from the original, translated by author's son, Boruch Lazewnik. New footnotes
explaining specific points and beautiful reproductions of the cited Hebrew texts
enhance the experience for readers of every background.
Rav Grainom Lazewnik
learned under some of the greatest lumi-
naries of the previous generation as a stu-
dent of the Novardok yeshivos in Europe.
After the war, he emigrated to Brooklyn,
New York, and eventually settled in Flat-
bush. He raised his family in the second-
floor apartment above the synagogue he
led for 50 years, Congregation Adar Gbyr,
where he delivered rousing speeches and
led Talmud study groups, right up until
his passing at the age of 106.
Commenting on the reissue of this
book, Rav Grainom said, "If one person
learns yiras Shomayim from it (fear of
Heaven), it's worth it."
