The King's Confidant 2, Rabbi Lehmann Treasury (Studio Rubin Comics)

The Jewish frum graphic novel has come a long way, and The King's Confidant 2 — the second volume in Studio Rubin's ambitious Rabbi Lehmann Treasury series — is the clearest proof yet of just how far. Noach Rubin and his studio have taken one of Rabbi Marcus Lehmann's most beloved historical novels and rebuilt it as a full-color, cinematic comic your kids will actually fight over.

The central figure is a real one: Reb Yissachar Berman Lehmann, a Torah-true Jewish businessman who became one of the most influential "Court Jews" of early-modern Europe. History remembers him as a financier to royalty; our community remembers him as the visionary gvir who built the magnificent shul of Halberstadt and quietly carried Klal Yisroel on his shoulders during a turbulent era. Volume 2 carries his story forward — deeper into the palaces of power, deeper into the Jewish communities counting on him, and deeper into the emunah that kept his compass pointed straight up even when the ground kept shifting under his feet.

What makes this series work is the pairing. Rubin knows how to pace a frame; Studio Rubin's artists know how to dress a king, light a candle in a beis medrash, and capture a kid's eyes mid-question. The result is a book that reads more like a movie than a textbook — and somehow teaches more history per page than either.

What you're actually getting

• A generously oversized 8.5" × 12" hardcover — the format these illustrations deserve
• 44 hand-illustrated full-color pages, cover to cover
• Fluent, kid-friendly English translation by Yocheved Lavon — clear enough for an 8-year-old reading solo, rich enough that parents end up reading along
• A self-contained Volume 2 that rewards readers of Volume 1 without punishing those who start here
• A story rooted in documented Jewish history, not invented fantasy

Who it's for

• Boys and girls ages 8 and up who love graphic novels but whose parents want the screen-time alternative to actually be worth the shelf space
• Families looking for a quality Shabbos-afternoon read-together — one that sparks real conversation about Hashgacha, hishtadlus, and using whatever influence Hashem gives you
• Gift-givers hunting for a Bar Mitzvah, birthday, Chanukah, or end-of-year gift that looks as impressive as it reads
• Collectors of contemporary Jewish historical fiction — especially anyone already building out the Rabbi Lehmann Treasury on their shelf

A note from Judaica Square

We've been watching the Studio Rubin catalog closely — their production values are consistently a tier above almost anything else in the frum kids' comic space. The second volume of the Rabbi Lehmann Treasury is exactly the kind of title we stock on both Lakewood floors the moment it lands. If you've been waiting for a graphic novel you can hand a child without a second thought, this one's been worth the wait.
