The skills demonstrated here are based on Child Parent Relationship Technique (CPRT), which empowers parents and leaves children feeling happy and secure. These skills include acknowledging the child’s desires and only then to communicate limits. The child can also be given a choice of alternatives.
Here’s how it plays out in the book:
Raizy wants another cookie. To avoid a power struggle, Mommy first acknowledges Raizy’s desire with empathy: “You want another cookie very much.” Now that Raizy feels understood, Mommy can effectively communicate the limit: “No more cookies now.”
After limit setting, Mommy continues considering Raizy’s desires and feelings by giving an alternative: “You can eat carrot soup.”
With these interactions, young children more fully feel that Mommy cares, enhancing secure attachment.
