These skills include acknowledging the child’s desires and only then to communicate limits. The child can also be given a choice of alternatives.
Here’s how it plays out in the book:
Raizy wants another cookie. To avoid a power struggle, Mommy first acknowledges Raizy’s desire with empathy: “You want another cookie very much.” Now that Raizy feels understood, Mommy can effectively communicate the limit: “No more cookies now.”
After limit setting, Mommy continues considering Raizy’s desires and feelings by giving an alternative: “You can eat carrot soup.”
With these interactions, young children more fully feel that Mommy cares, enhancing secure attachment.
