Anyone who lights an oil menorah knows the eighth-night problem: nine spent wicks a night, still oily, going somewhere. Dropped in the kitchen garbage they soak through the bag; left on the tray they mark the tablecloth. A dedicated tin solves it. Used wicks and burnt cups go straight in and stay contained until you empty it after yom tov.
Because these are wicks used for a mitzvah, many families prefer not to throw them into ordinary household garbage, and a tin kept beside the menorah makes that easy to keep up with over eight nights rather than only on the first.
