This is design 540 in its embroidered form: gold thread laid over black velvet, worked across the face in the same shape the plain version of 540 carries in blocked materials. Seeing the two side by side is instructive — the layout is shared, and only the treatment changes.
Sizes are the 10.5 by 10 inch bar mitzvah bag, the 14 by 14 large talis bag and the 16 by 16 extra large. If the bag is going to a boy at his bar mitzvah the smallest size is what he needs for tefillin, and the gold makes it read as a gift rather than as equipment. A man buying for a tallis should start at 14 inches.
