Description
Design 740 gathers its gold embroidery at the corners and leaves the black velvet open through the middle. It is a cornerwork design rather than a centred one, and the effect is that the bag looks framed from the outside in, with the whole centre of the face left as plain velvet.
It is made at 10.5 by 10 inches for bar mitzvah, 14 by 14 as a large talis bag and 16 by 16 extra large. The open centre is the practical feature: nothing to work around if a name is being added, and less thread to catch in a knapsack. A boy receiving tefillin takes the smallest size, and it will hold a standard pair comfortably.
Corner designs age well because the wear on a bag happens at the edges, and here the edges are the part that is reinforced with stitching.
