Description
The keser is the oldest motif in this category, and design 770 gives it straight: a gold embroidered crown set into the middle of a black velvet face, drawn large enough to read from a few rows back. Velvet takes light differently than a flat weave does, so the gold thread lifts off the nap rather than sinking into it.
Three sizes are made. The 10.5 by 10 bar mitzvah bag suits a bochur carrying his first tefillin and a smaller tallis. The 14 by 14 large talis bag is where most men land, since a folded wool tallis and both battim sit inside without being pressed. The 16 by 16 extra large is for a heavier tallis you would rather lay in flat than fold down twice.
A crown design ages well, and that matters for a bag bought at thirteen and still in use twenty years later. If you are buying for a bochur, it is usually worth taking the size he will grow into rather than the one that fits him this year.
