Gold embroidery over black velvet gives design 847 its weight. The thread is worked densely enough that the pattern carries across a room, and the black velvet underneath keeps it from looking bright for its own sake. It is a substantial-looking bag rather than a delicate one.
Malchut cuts it at 10.5 by 10 for bar mitzvah, 14 by 14 for a large talis bag and 16 by 16 for extra large. Choose by contents, not by preference: tefillin alone fit anywhere, tefillin plus a folded standard tallis want the 14 by 14, and a large or double-thick wool tallis wants the 16 by 16 so the zipper is not under strain every day.
