Description
Thick black stripes, and a great many of them — that is what identifies a Chabad tallis from across a shul, and the pattern follows the tallis of the Rebbe as Lubavitcher chassidim have worn it. The cloth is pure wool, soft against the neck rather than coarse, and the stripes are the only ornament on it.
The sizes are labelled medium 60, large 70, extra large 63, extra extra large 80 and 3X large 90, and the one to take is decided by your height rather than by the number itself: medium suits five foot five to five foot seven, large five foot eight to five foot ten, extra large five foot eleven to six feet, and upward from there. Strings come as the thin avodas yad, tied for you, or bli — no strings at all — if you have a sofer you use or your own tzitzis to put on.
These are the shawls sent out to Chabad houses around the world, so a bochur heading out on shlichus generally takes this rather than a standard Ashkenaz stripe.
