Description
One of the fuller embroidered faces Malchut produces, 1413 covers most of the bag with worked thread and leaves very little plain ground. That much stitching adds real body to the face and gives the bag a firmness you can feel when you pick it up. It belongs to the upper price tier, where the material underneath is heavier and the finishing at the corners is the tightest.
Three cuts are made. The bar mitzvah bag, 10.5" x 10", is scaled around a first pair of tefillin. The large talis bag, 14" x 14", is the standard adult size. The extra large, 16" x 16", is for a full or heavy woolen tallis. Because the pattern covers the whole face, it looks proportionate at every size, which is not true of designs built around a single centre motif.
A bag with this much work on it is usually bought for a milestone rather than as a replacement. If that is the case here, take the size that fits the tallis he will own going forward, not the one sitting at home now.
