Sizes run from 10.5" x 10" bar mitzvah up through 14" x 14" large talis to 16" x 16" extra large. A bochur beginning to lay tefillin needs only the smallest. A man taking tallis and tefillin to shul each morning wants the 14x14 at minimum. The 16x16 is the size to take if your tallis is large, or if the bag lives in a briefcase or a car and gets handled roughly.
