Description
Echt Terkish. The yarn is unusually thick, and the tallis that comes off it is coarse and heavy in a way modern weaving largely stopped producing — the weight of the shawls made in Tunis more than a hundred and fifty years ago. Men who wear one talk about feeling the tallis on their shoulders through davening, and that is what it is bought for rather than something to be tolerated.
It is lined, with side reinforcements that add years to a tallis handled hard every day, and the tips carry a double knot. Sizes are 60, 63, 70, 80 and 90, taken by height rather than by build: 60 for five foot five to five foot seven, 70 for five foot eight to five foot ten, and larger from there. Strings are the thick avodas yad, tied, or bli for a man who ties his own or wants a particular sofer to do it.
This is not a summer tallis and was never meant to be one. It is heavy, it hangs, and both of those are the reason to choose it.
