A shamash has to outlast everything it lights, which is why a leftover Chanukah candle makes a poor one. This box solves the whole week at once: eight beeswax shamoshim, one large and seven small, so there is a fresh one waiting every night.
The large candle is the natural choice for the eighth night, when there are eight wicks or eight cups to get through before it can be set down. The seven smaller ones handle the earlier nights, when there is less to light.
