Description
Israel's History in Jewish Law
- Throughout history, the Jewish community has been confronted by new developments and innovations, and rabbis have responded with halakhic analysis and scholarship. The establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, however, created a very different challenge. Laws deal- ing with government and sovereignty, questions regarding economic models for a country and wartime morality, had not been discussed in a practical sense for over two thousand years. Should the state coerce its citizens to keep the Torah? What is the halakhic status of a secular government? Who is obligated to join the Jewish army? Should the waves of immigration to Israel influence the laws of conversion?
- In this groundbreaking book, Rabbi Aviad Tabory addresses major halakhic issues that have confronted the State of Israel since its in- ception. With clarity and scholarship, he delves into actual historical events and examines the rabbinic rulings surrounding them: from the loss of the Dakar submarine to peace with Egypt, from the capture of Adolf Eichmann to the disengagement from Gush Katif. The chapters of this book pay tribute to the great rabbis who, with broad knowl- edge and deep insight, apply classic halakhic concepts under novel circumstances and reveal previously hidden dimensions in ancient texts. Collectively, the fascinating cases examined in this book attest to the continuing need for thoughtful and faithful halakhic responses to the dramatic events taking place in the Jewish homeland.
