Frequently asked questions

How do I choose between an oil menorah and a candle menorah?
Decide the fuel first, because it determines the menorah. Oil menorahs have cups or glass inserts and take olive oil with wicks; candle menorahs have sockets sized for standard Chanukah candles. Some take both with an insert set. Buying a beautiful menorah in the wrong format is the most common mistake here.

What should I look for in a menorah?
A stable, weighted base above all — it holds eight flames for half an hour or more. Then: sockets or cups of a standard size, straight and level branches, and a shamash clearly set apart. Ease of cleaning matters more than people expect by night six.

Should the lights be in a straight line and at the same height?
The common practice is that the eight lights should be level and evenly spaced, with the shamash set apart — higher, lower or off to the side. Most menorahs sold here are built that way; if you are considering an unusual design, it is worth checking with your rav.

Silver, brass or lucite?
Silver and silverplate are the traditional and the usual gift. Brass is durable and less demanding to look after. Lucite and glass suit modern interiors and clean up easily. All light the same — it is the room and the budget that decide.

Where should the menorah be placed?
Customs vary. Many place it in a doorway or a window facing the street to publicise the miracle. Whichever you follow, choose a menorah that physically fits the spot — measure the windowsill before buying, not after.

Is a menorah a good gift?
It is the standard gift for a new home, a newly married couple, or a bar mitzvah boy — used every year, and nobody has too many. Allow 10 to 14 days if you want it engraved.

Can I see menorahs in person?
Yes, and for a substantial piece we recommend it. Weight, finish and scale do not come across in a photograph. Both Lakewood locations stock the Chanukah range seasonally.
