Frequently asked questions

Ram's horn or Yemenite?
A ram's horn is the classic Ashkenaz shofar — shorter, smoother, the standard in most shuls in this community. A Yemenite is a kudu horn: long, spiralled and deeper in tone. Both are kosher; the choice is minhag, sound and preference.

Natural or polished finish?
Purely cosmetic. A natural finish keeps the horn's original ridged surface and colour variation; polished is smoothed and more uniform. Neither affects the sound or the kashrus.

What does Badatz or Rabbanut certification mean here?
It indicates the hechsher under which the shofar was produced and checked. Which you need depends on your own practice — ask your rav if you are unsure, and we will tell you what certification a given shofar carries.

Does a longer shofar sound better?
Longer usually means deeper, but bore, curve and mouthpiece matter as much. A shofar the baal tokea can sound reliably beats an impressive one he fights with — which is the argument for choosing in person.

How should I look after a shofar?
Keep it dry, store it in a bag or on a stand rather than loose in a cupboard, and wipe the mouthpiece after use. Do not wash it out. Looked after, a shofar lasts decades.

Can I hear one before buying?
Yes, and we recommend it — sound does not translate to a product photo. Both Lakewood locations stock shofros through Elul.
