Frequently asked questions
When does selichos start?
Ashkenazim begin on the Motzaei Shabbos before Rosh Hashanah, provided there are at least four days before Yom Tov; otherwise a week earlier. Sephardim say selichos through the whole of Elul. Buy the selichos volume in your nusach before that first night rather than on it — it is the most commonly forgotten sefer of the year.
What should I be buying in Elul?
Practically: selichos, machzorim for both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and a shofar if you need one. Beyond that, Elul is when most people pick up a teshuva or mussar sefer for the season.
What are good teshuva seforim for Elul?
The classics are widely available in Hebrew and in translation, and there is a large range of contemporary Elul and Yamim Noraim material. Tell us whether you want Hebrew or English and how much time you realistically have each day, and we will point you at something suitable rather than something impressive.
Should I replace worn machzorim now or after Yom Tov?
Now. Machzorim that fall apart are always noticed on Rosh Hashanah and always forgotten by the time the shops are quiet again in Cheshvan.
How late can I order for Rosh Hashanah?
Allow about two weeks for shipping. Inside that window, use free pickup at either Lakewood store or $7 flat-rate local delivery.
Do you have children's books for the Yamim Noraim?
Yes — there is a good range covering Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and the themes of the season, from picture books through to chapter books for older children.
