The eighth night is when short matches become a problem. Nine flames are already burning, the row is close together, and a regular match runs out of stem before you finish. These are cut long specifically so one strike carries across the whole menorah.
Blue keeps them in keeping with the standard Chanukah palette, and forty-five matches lines up neatly with the number of lights across the holiday, so a single pack is one match per light with room for a miss.
They are just as handy year-round for Shabbos candles in deep glass holders and for yahrzeit candles in tall jars, where a household match cannot reach the wick at all.
