Jaffa, winter of 1914:

Half a year after the outbreak of World War I, the Ottoman Empire forced all foreign subjects living within its territories to accept Ottoman citizenship. But not everyone wanted to become a Turkish citizen — especially since that meant being drafted into the Turkish army. As a result, the authorities decided to deport all foreign subjects from the Empire’s lands.

An Italian ship anchors off the shores of Jaffa, and the soldiers receive orders to bring the Jews with foreign citizenship aboard as quickly as possible. Elisha is not at home when the soldiers arrive to deport his widowed mother. Instead, he is brought aboard a different ship…
