Description
An apple worked in clear lucite and hollowed to hold honey — design #330 is the literal reading of the simanim, and it is disarming on a Rosh Hashanah table that is otherwise all silver and glass. The lucite is clear through, so the honey itself supplies the colour and the dish reads as a glow rather than as another object.
It goes out at the head of the table for the first night, gets passed for the apple, and then generally stays out for the rest of Tishrei because it is the kind of thing children keep going back to. Lucite is forgiving about the inevitable — honey down the side, sticky fingers, a spoon left in it overnight — and washes off without clouding.
It also travels. Families eating the first night at one house and the second somewhere else can carry it along without the caution that comes with crystal. Sent ahead of Rosh Hashanah it is one of the few gifts that is genuinely useful that week and still clearly not a last-minute pick.
