Description
Talis Ateres is the dressier of the Shabbos tallisim: double fringes at the ends instead of single, a full lining, and a sideband running the edge. The three together are what set it apart from a weekday tallis at a glance. The doubled fringes give fullness at the corners, and the sideband finishes the edge so nothing frays along it over the years.
It comes in 60, 63, 70, 80 and 90. Choose by height — 60 for a man of five foot five to five foot seven, 70 for five foot eight to five foot ten, and the larger numbers as you pass six feet, particularly if you bring the tallis over your head. Strings are the thick avodas yad, tied, or bli if you would rather put your own on afterwards.
It is a Shabbos and Yom Tov tallis first. Men who keep two usually daven the week in something plain and reserve this one for Shabbos, and the difference is immediately visible when the two are hanging next to each other.
