A seven-day memorial candle filled with one hundred percent vegetable oil, housed in a plastic jar with a cover. Light it once and it carries through the whole shiva without being touched again.
The plastic jar is a deliberate choice. It does not get dangerously hot to handle, it will not shatter if it is knocked off a table in a crowded house, and the cover keeps it clean before it is lit and lets you close it after.
