Antique-treated velvet is the ground here, and it behaves differently to standard velvet — the finish is deliberately uneven, deeper in some passages than others, so the fabric looks like it has been in the family a while before the embroidery is even taken into account. That embroidery is dense on design 820, covering a good share of the face, with sterling crystals set through it to break up the darkness of the antiqued pile.

Sizes run small at 14.5 by 17.5, medium at 15.5 by 19.5 and large at 19.5 by 23.5. On a heavily worked cover like this one the large is worth considering even for an ordinary table, because the design has room to be read properly rather than being cropped by the edges of a smaller cut.
