The medium holder is the one that fits most standard oil menorah glasses, and it is the size to buy if you are not sure which you have. Nine holders cover a full menorah, eight lights and the shamash, and the fifty red cotton wicks included will carry you well past a single Chanukah.
The holder's job is simple and easy to get wrong: hold the wick upright, keep the tip at the right height above the oil, and stay put when the cup is nudged. A properly sized metal holder does that all evening; an oversized one rocks and drowns the wick.
