Start with tefillin. This is the single biggest decision — and the single most meaningful piece he'll own. Most bar mitzvah boys start with Peshutim Mehudarim or Dakkos; many upgrade to Gassos later. Gassos is the lifetime investment — thicker batim, higher-grade parshiyos, a pair he'll wear for 60+ years. Factor in cost, longevity, and your rav's advice.

Tallis katan (tzitzis worn under the shirt) — order two or three pairs. Boys wear them daily and they do wear out. Pick the beged material based on climate: wool for cooler, cotton or mesh for warmer.

Tallis gadol (the large tallis for shacharis) — Chasidic boys typically start wearing from bar mitzvah; in many Ashkenazic communities, the tallis gadol begins at marriage. Check your minhag. If yes, pick a wool tallis sized for his height.

Siddur — a good hardcover siddur he'll use every day. Many families gift a beautifully bound siddur with his name embossed. ArtScroll Ashkenaz, Sephardic, or Nusach Ari all available.

Yarmulke: get 5-10. They get lost. Velvet, suede, or knit depending on your minhag and his style.

The small pieces: a quality pen (for speeches and thank-you notes), a kippah clip, a tefillin mirror, a siddur cover. Optional but appreciated.

What's the minimum I need for a bar mitzvah boy?

Tefillin, tallis katan (2-3 pairs), a siddur, and kippot. Everything else is a luxury. Total minimum: $800-$1500 depending on tefillin grade.

Should he get Gassos tefillin or start with Peshutim?

Both are fully kosher. Gassos is the lifetime investment — more expensive but lasts 60+ years. Peshutim or Dakkos are good starter pairs. Many families upgrade after the boy is 25-30. Ask your rav.

When should I order?

At least 3 months before the bar mitzvah. Tefillin can take 4-6 weeks for higher grades. If you need rush delivery, call us first — we may have in-stock options.
