Frequently asked questions

What is the most common bar mitzvah gift?
Seforim — a Chumash, a siddur, or a masechta or set of Gemara — usually embossed with his name. After that, a tallis or tefillin bag, which he uses every single morning for decades. Those two categories cover most of what leaves this store for a bar mitzvah.

What should I spend?
There is no fixed rule, and it varies by community and how close you are to the family. Practically, the range runs from a book or a good kippah, through a bag or a single sefer, up to a boxed set or silver for immediate family. Tell us a budget and we will show you what is good at that number rather than what is expensive.

What is a good gift if he already has tefillin and a tallis?
A tefillin or tallis bag is still safe — the ones that come with a set are often basic and get upgraded. Beyond that: seforim he does not own, a quality kippah, a shtender, or a watch. Ask what he received already if you can.

Can it be personalised, and how long does that take?
Yes — embossing on seforim and embroidery on bags, with no minimum order. Allow 10 to 14 days plus shipping, so order about three weeks before the simcha. Personalised items are not returnable, so we confirm spelling in writing first.

What do I give if I am not close to the family?
A sefer, a bencher, or gift-appropriate Judaica is always correct and never awkward. Avoid anything requiring a size or a personal preference.

When should I order?
Three weeks ahead if you want personalisation, two weeks otherwise. Bar mitzvah season clusters, and the good bag sets go first.

Can I see things in person?
Yes — and for a bag set or silver, it is worth it. Both Lakewood locations carry the range: 1105 East County Line Road and 1328 River Avenue.
