Black Velvet Kippah, Mr. Dov Bear Yarmulke

The Mr. Dov Bear Kippah is a four-panel black velvet yarmulke for boys, embroidered with a smartly dressed teddy bear, made in 9 sizes and priced at $9.99. The bear stands with one paw in his pocket, wearing a green blazer with gold buttons and a white pocket square over a cream cable-knit sweater and a light blue collar, with a green cap, cuffed tan trousers and brown shoes. The velvet is a deep, soft black and the kippah is finished with a matte black band at the rim, so it looks like a proper Shabbos kippah with a bear on it rather than a novelty cap. Sold by Judaica Square, shipping nationwide.

How this compares

Best for

• Boys who wear a black velvet kippah on Shabbos but still want their Dov Bear
• A first velvet kippah for an upsherin or a young boy starting cheder
• Brothers of different ages — the sizes run from toddler to adult
• Shabbos, yom tov and simchas where a printed or denim kippah would look too casual

Not the right choice if

• You want a plain black velvet kippah with nothing on it
• You need a kippah that shrugs off rough play — velvet shows scuffs and pile marks
• You want something washable; velvet and embroidery are spot-clean only
• You want a light summer kippah — a linen or mesh kippah wears cooler than velvet

Why customers choose it

For many boys the black velvet kippah is the one that goes to shul, and the Dov Bear kippot are the ones they actually want to wear. This design puts the two together: a black velvet dome that matches a white Shabbos shirt, and one bear dressed for the occasion in a blazer, sweater and cap. The bear is stitched in several separate thread colours rather than printed, so the green of the jacket and the gold buttons stay sharp. Nine sizes cover a toddler through a grown man, which makes it an easy father-and-son or brothers pick.

Size guide

Sizing is guidance, not a promise — heads vary. When you are between two sizes, the larger one sits better.

Frequently asked questions

What size velvet kippah should I buy for a 4 year old?
Size 2 fits most 4 and 5 year olds. For a small 3 year old, size 1 usually sits better; when in doubt, take the larger of the two sizes.

Is this the same bear as the Classic Dov Bear velvet kippah?
No. The Classic Dov Bear is on navy velvet with the bear in a navy sweater. Mr. Dov Bear is on black velvet and wears a green blazer, a cream knit sweater and a green cap.

Is a black velvet kippah with a bear appropriate for Shabbos?
Families differ. Many boys wear this to shul on Shabbos because the ground is traditional black velvet; if your son's school asks for plain black, keep a plain velvet kippah for that.

How do I care for a velvet kippah?
Brush the pile gently in one direction and spot clean with a barely damp cloth. Do not wash, iron or fold it in a pocket — pressure flattens the velvet.

Can you embroider his name on it?
Yes. A name in white or gold thread on the side panel works well opposite the bear — WhatsApp 732-444-3111 to set it up.

What is the difference between the numbered and flat sizes?
Numbered sizes are shaped four-panel kippot that sit on the crown. Flat sizes are measured edge to edge in centimetres and lie flatter on the head.

Does it come in a size for an adult man?
Yes. Size 5 fits most adult men, size 6 a larger head, and the 18cm and 20cm flats are adult flat sizes.
