The slit opens at the front rather than pulling over the head, which is a small thing until you are dealing with a twelve-year-old who is already late and does not want his hair mussed.

Strings are thin avodas yad, thick avodas yad, or bli. Thin is the everyday hand-tied string and what most boys in this range wear; thick is heavier and more visible below a jacket, which some boys approaching bar mitzvah actually want.
