Description
The round weave, in black. Where the flat gartel lies against the kapoteh as a band, the round one is worked into a cord that sits proud and holds a knot firmly, which is why men who wind theirs tightly tend to prefer it. It is the ritual belt worn at davening, gartel in Yiddish and hagura in Hebrew, used chiefly by chassidim.
Twelve widths are carried, from size 4 through size 36, taking in 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, 22 and 26 along the way. As always the number is the count of strings making up the width, so the smaller sizes are slim cords for daily use and the larger ones are heavy and substantial. The price range across the sizes is wide, which makes it easy to buy a thin one for weekdays and a thick one for Shabbos at the same time.
For a boy receiving his first gartel, one of the small sizes here is where most families start, and it is inexpensive enough to keep a spare in the house.
