Embroidered Gefluchten Atarah for a Tallis, Widths 4.5 to 6.5 Inches (#101)

Design #101 is the embroidered cut of the gefluchten atarah — the braided neckband that runs along the collar of a tallis, here carried with embroidery worked across the face instead of left plain. It is the piece that turns an ordinary white wool tallis into one that reads as dressed. Sewn on, it sits at the shoulders where everyone standing behind you sees it, which is why the width you pick matters more than most men expect.

Three widths are offered: 4.5 inches, 5.5 inches and 6.5 inches. The 4.5 is the modest cut, right for a lighter tallis or for a bochur who does not want the band overwhelming his shoulders. The 5.5 is the middle and the one most men take. The 6.5 is the broad one, and it belongs on a heavy full-size wool tallis where a narrow band would look lost. Measure the atarah currently on your tallis before ordering, or measure the collar itself, and match the width to that.
