Gefluchten Atarah Style #101, Widths 3.5 to 5.5 Inches

Style #101 is a gefluchten atarah — a braided band rather than a flat printed one, with the weave running the full length of the neckpiece. Braided construction gives it body: it holds its shape along the collar instead of collapsing into the fold of the tallis, and the texture reads at a distance where flat embroidery would not.

Three cuts are offered and one of them is unusual. The 4.5 by 38 inch and the 5.5 by 38 inch bands are the standard lengths for a full tallis collar, and the inch between them is the difference between a modest band and a fuller one. The 3.5 by 65 inch is the narrow, extra-long cut — that length is for a tallis where the atarah is meant to run down the sides as well as across the top. Know which you are after before ordering, because the 65 inch band is not simply a longer version of the same look.
